Specialty Pharmacy

-bringing 'high touch' to
'high tech' pharmaceuticals TM

What is "Specialty Pharmacy?" Specialty pharmaceuticals represent a relatively new area of prescription medications, one with a small market in terms of patient populations. Yet it is the single most explosive market in terms of growth and cost. In 2001, the United States spent approximately $22 billion on specialty pharmaceuticals. In 2008, an estimated $73 billion was spent within this sector. The specialty pharmaceuticals subset is expected to exceed $110 billion, or 30.3% of the entire prescription market. There are currently more than 1,000 specialty drugs in development at 25% of the entire pharmaceutical pipeline. Specialty pharmaceutical programs most commonly include:
  • high-cost ($5,000 - $400,000 per year)
  • therapies that require ongoing monitoring
  • special storage & handling instructions
  • detailed patient education / reinforcement

The major conditions these drugs treat include, but are not limited to:
  • Cancer
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Hemophilia
  • Hepatitis C
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Infertility
  • Crohn's Disease
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Growth Hormone Deficiency
Specialty First is a new offering with PharmacyFirst. This department is responsible for creating a network of independent, community-based pharmacies within the Pharmacy First affiliates that will facilitate the distribution of and access to "specialty pharmaceuticals". This unit works closely with the manufacturers (and/or their designees) to identify opportunities and develop and implement programs optimally suited for the community setting. The basic components of the programs include but are not limited to the following:
  • Certification of Pharmacist
  • Coordination of Patient Education
  • Procurement/Storage/Handling Requirements
  • Ongoing Patient Monitoring
  • Analysis of Associated Data
  • Infertility

The goals of these drug-specific programs are:
  • To, first and foremost, facilitate improved patient outcomes
  • Promote safety & continuity of care
  • Increase the prescription business of the network pharmacies
  • Serve as a viable/valuable distribution channel for the manufacturers
